EVESHAM, NJ (CBS) — Evesham Township Police, along with Uber and BeMyDD, are announcing an extension of the “Evesham Saving Lives” program.

Authorities say to date, the program has taken nearly 1,000 residents Evesham and Voorhees residents to their homes free of charge.

Additionally, police say the safe rides have led to an 83 percent reduction in the arrest of Evesham residents coming from liquor establishments and a 55 percent reduction in overall DUI arrests.

“This has far exceeded my expectations. The ESL program has shown that DUIs can be reduced and should be a model for communities throughout the United States,” says Mayor Randy Brown.

Authorities say through June 1, any resident of Evesham or Voorhees will be provided a free ride home seven days a week, between the hours of 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. from any liquor establishment within the two towns.

All free rides will be provided by Uber and BeMyDD.

Police say the initiative will continue to be fully funded by donations from various businesses, restaurants and donors.
