EVESHAM, New Jersey — A southern New Jersey town is extending a free designated driver program that it says has greatly helped curb drunken driving.

Evesham Township announced Friday that the "Evesham Savings Lives" program will now be extended until June 1. It had been launched last September.

The program provides residents from Evesham and Voorhees with rides home from bars in those towns. It operates seven days a week between the hours of 9 p.m. and 2 a.m.

Officials say the program has "far exceeded by expectations" with nearly 1,000 people from those two towns being driven home. It's operated through a partnership with Uber and BeMyDD.

Evesham officials say there has been a 55-percent reduction in drunken driving arrests since the program began.
